How Newbury Parkway Flats Found a Clear Solution to Scale
Newbury Parkway, a stunning new development of shops and high-end flats owned by Standard Life, was built in October 2011. The beautifully appointed 475,000 ft2 shopping mall features boutiques, cafes and restaurants, plus 200 privately-owned apartments.
The area is known to have hard water with levels of calcium carbonate measured up to 295mg/l, which (according to British Water’s calculations) is borderline very high.
At Newbury Parkway, electrolytic scale inhibitors designed to protect hot-water appliances had been installed when the flats were built, but these failed to protect the boilers resulting in all 200 of them having to be replaced just three years later.
The decision to install Combimate was made by the contractor, BGS Plumbing and Heating in Newbury, and backed by the M&E consultant, Cundall based in Birmingham.
Combimate works by coating the inside of pipes, boiler heat exchangers and appliances with phosphates to prevent scale-causing minerals from accumulating and adhering.
Steve Halsey, managing director of BGS Plumbing advises: “I had no hesitation in recommending Combimate as a solution – we installed them on other projects and I even have one in my own house so I knew it worked.”
“I’m delighted to say it’s been a complete success; really quick to install and immediately solved the problem. We’ve had no call backs from the flat owners since. They tell us they love it, as do the owners: scale deposits are now a thing of the past.
“We now routinely install Combimates with our new boilers. For a relatively small investment, it’s problem solved as far as we are concerned. And the service from Combimate’s team has been outstanding. I can’t recommend Combimate highly enough.”
Chris Boakes, Combimate’s Sales Specification Engineer, says: “This is clearly a very significant installation, but one which Combimate is very effective at managing.
“We trained BGS’s installers before the project began, and I’m very pleased to say that despite the size of the installation, it has been trouble-free.
“The owners of the 200 flats should now enjoy the many benefits of a scale-free existence. This extends beyond increasing the efficiency and longevity of their boilers, and lower gas bills; the Combimates will also prevent scale damage to taps, kettles, dishwashers and washing machines in future.
